It is caused commonly by excess consumption of food and non or lack of exercise or physical activities, the consumption of excess fat and sugary food is a major contributor to obesity. Obese individuals have greater energy expenditure than their normal counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body weight. A very small percentage of obesity is caused primarily by genetics, medical reasons or psychiatric illness and other factors like smoking, hormonal dis-function, insufficient sleep, pregnancy etc.
Hence, it is associated with some health problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, obstructive sleep apena, death and some types of cancer, osteoarthritis of the knee and asthma. Obesity has been found to reduce life expectancy. Individuals with obesity are often stigmatized against in work places, buses, transportation companies and in some cultures, it is referred to as a disease, there are places where obese are charged extra for space and weight compared to their normal counterparts.
Finally, this problem can be managed by treatments that consist of reduced intake of low calorie diet for weight loss and increased exercise or physical activities. A combination of exercise and consuming lower food energy diet permanently will lead to weight loss in the long run. In the short-term, low carbohydrate diet appear better than fat diets for weight loss. In the lung run; however, all types of low-carbohydrate and low-fat diet appear equally beneficial for weight loss. Reduction in the consumption of sugary, processed and packaged food and drinks will also be helpful for weight loss.
